[GNC] How to move a transaction with splits from one top-level account to another - take 2

Xe Roy-

From what I can tell is that you want is to move the transaction (from a
Quicken perspective) from one account to another. In GnuCash, where a
transaction shows up in a top-level account is decided by how that transaction
is comprised or broken up into its components which auto-magically displays on
the top-level account. Quicken is not a double entry system while GnuCash is
so what that means is that a basic transaction in GnuCash will be broken up
and have at least two, for lack of better word for Quicken, sub-components. In
Quicken for example you have a Credit Card 1 account in which you post a
transaction, say you buy groceries worth $10. In Quicken that transaction will
be in Credit Card 1 account with category of perhaps Grocery. In GnuCash this
same transaction will show up in two places as there are no Quicken categories
equivalent in GnuCash -- just accounts in GnuCash -- thus the Credit Card 1
account and in the account named Grocery. Because transaction has two
components which others have referred to here as a "split" -- the GnuCash
"split" which is not same as the Quicken version of "split" -- updating one or
the other component will move that transaction into proper account.

So if you made a mistake and posted a transaction into Visa account instead of
Master Card, open up that transaction in Visa account, and expand the
transaction into its sub-components. One of the sub-components will point back
to the account you are in, Visa. If you now update that to point to Master
Card, that transaction will auto-magically disappear from Visa account and
appear in Master Card account -- equivalent of Quicken "move".

With this background hope you can make some sense in difference between
Quicken and GnuCash. Think of it this way: Quicken "categories" are nothing
more than account that are hidden in Quicken but visible in GnuCash.

Xe Roy,

You will find if you just change your top level account in the transaction,
the splits will follow it. Just as Michael described above. I've used
jump but I find it just as easy to make that one correction.
Additionally, if you found you chose the wrong account for one of your
splits, just change it to the correct account and only that split gets
changed.
