Hi Richard,
GnuCash is adequate for very basic inventory, by tracking the total value of each item, or lot.
It works well for my small business where I track only a few items of moderate to high dollar value.
I post the change of $ value for the items added or used, and manually note quantities involved.
For my free stock (high volume low cost: screws, nuts, resistors etc.) I use the old manual counting method;
A little messy, but it works well for me.
