Extra backups is never a bad thing. ;-)
That said, you could tune your backup program to exclude the backup and log files or you could switch to the SQLite3 backend that modifies the data file in place and so doesn’t make backup files (which are really the previous XML file renamed with the timestamp). In the latter case you’d still have the log files. There’s at present there’s no way to tell GnuCash to move the previous XML file to another directory nor to write the log files to another directory.
