Greg,

"Closing the books" is a formal accounting procedure originating
primarily in the days of manual accounting in paper ledgers. As others
have pointed out, Gnucash carries out the necessary calculations in its
reports so there is no real need to carry out the formal procedure. In
accounting practice it is also usually accompanied by a series of other
adjustments to the accounts which ensure that items like prepaid
expenses and or income is recorded at the date the expense is incurred
or when the income is earned, which may be paid or actually received
and recorded in a different accounting period to the one they apply to
with regard to the accounting rules about timing, are correctly
allocated proportionally to the appropriate accounting period. In
personal accounting this in most cases has no relevance, although it
may for taxation purposes, but in business accounting it is necessary
to ensure that the correct profit/loss is recorded for the period.

Thanks to our developers Gnucash is programmed to give the correct
results in reports whether the books have been formally closed or not.
