I would NOT consider a storage device accessible to multiple computers
to be "an external service". For example, a drive connected to my
wireless modem/router. Or another computer on the LAN running a data
server. I am not using any external data storage. For those who are,
what are your CONTRACTUAL relationships with the provider of those
services. What are they allowed to do or not do with your data? Can they
show it to third parties (for example, without a warrant?)

I would not consider "syncing" a totally safe method with regard to
PROPER handling of the resource locking as there is not ONE lock
controlling access to the resource. But in practice, probably going to
be safe. Keep in mind I come from a work background where hundreds of
users trying to access a resource and so even a few seconds delay in
resource access control likely to sooner or later lead to disaster.

"concurrent processing" -- what you have to study if you intend to
design operating systems, database manager programs, etc. >>
