That is correct (for the journal). The journal is virtual with gnucash,
but as you have discovered, your report shows you transactions in a way
you didn't expect.
Back in the days before computers when we kept books pen and ink on
paper, we FIRST entered transactions in a book called the journal. Each
transaction would have a date, maybe check number, at least one debit
account and amount, at least one credit account and amount, and a field
for description. There would also be a field to check off when that
entry was posted (entered into the ledger. No "balance column" because
the net balance of each transaction always zero (total debits equal
total credits)
In other words, looks like when you are entering a "split transaction"
(more than one debit or credit). You can tell gnucash to have you enter
transactions this old fashioned way even when only two accounts.
With gnucash we are entering transactions directly into the ledger. Us
old timers think of it as "virtual journal, automatic posting"

PS -- If you have lost past P&L reports you can recreate them. Just
specify the start and end dates for the date interval you want
(Edit=>report options=>general will let you change the report to the
dates you want.
