[GNC] Font size

Try as I might, I cannot access c:/. I do have the font size changed
with the gtk file. Thank you Ken. The long version went right over my
head.
A change in font requires changing column widths and I know someone has
already asked about that. I cannot find the chain.

Phyllis — Not to worry. From what you have said, I think you can still fix thi

First - if you are having difficulty. Try re-installing GNU from scratch. This
will get your shortcut on the desktop back and hopefully should get you back to
square 1. Make sure you are satisfied that you are at a good starting place.
Now - if you have your file, use Windows explorer to find the folder where it ne
eds to go. The folder where it needs to go is listed on the GnuCash HELP-ABOUT
page. Go to HELP-ABOUT and look for the folder which is named by GNC_USERCONFIG
_DIR. The should be an Appdata\Roaming \GNUCash folder in your user profile.
If you have trouble "seeing" this folder in Windows Explorer - make sure you hav
e all folders visible in Windows Explorer. I don't think it is a hidden folder
- but I could be wrong here since I have as my default that I want to see all f
olders in Windows Explorer.
Once you can "see" this folder - you then can copy the file that you made to thi
s folder; restart GNUCash; and the new font should take hold.
One more thing — the file that you made may need to be like Joanna's. Mine show
s as one line — but I think hers is four separate lines. Either way — GNUCash
should be able to read it and adjust accordingly. Best of Luck.

Thanks Ken, et. all. I managed to mess it up. I cannot access c:\ in the file
explorer. I created the file exactly as above, including the * {font:.......;}
and filed it on my desktop.
I decided to open it to verify it was correct and got the message "gtk-3.0.css a
lready exists. Open anyway?" So I did. I lost the GNU shortcut from my deskto
p.
I can open GNU from a history where I found the exact pathway in the Help-About
and was able to get there by clicking on that to get here:
Do I just move the file from the desktop to this location?
Thanks in advance for your help. po

OK — For Phyllis and Joanna - Please bear with me. I do have a programming back
ground - so I have to be mindful to not be too technical. This is for Windows.
Steps:
1.
If you don't have one already, you want to make a small text file called: gtk
-3.0.css
2.
In this file, you just need one line of text: * {font: 14px verdana, arial,
sans-serif;} (format it just like I have it and notice, I am using 14 font an
d I am using verdana as the main one because that is what I like. Use what ever
size and font you want to replace the 14px verdana).
3.
Save this file with the one line of text in the following folder - c:\users\x
xxxx\Appdata\Roaming\Gnucash (where xxxxx is your user profile). If this does
not make sense to you - open GnuCash and hit HELP — ABOUT. The folder listed ne
xt to GNC_USERCONFIG_DIR is where the file needs to be.
Close out of Gnucash, if you have it open, and then re-open it and the new font
should take hold. If this does not work - others can chime in where I may have
made a mistake. Hope this helps.

Phyllis ? welcome to the club! This was a question I had many times
- and
thanks to the great group here - I was able to get this fixed.
The wiki below explains how to make these adjustments, the proper
file
name, and the proper file location for each operating system.
[5]https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Customizing_the_Appearance
If this does not help you ? or if you need more detailed
instructions,
write back with your OS and version of GnuCash - and someone here
will walk
you through it.
Hope this helps.
Ken

The GnuCash financial data is kept in a file, and this is one you
must back
up. I have mine on my home NAS, so that all computers and OSs can
access
it. The file name is "something".gnucash, and this should absolutely
be a
file that you backup. To move your file to a new location, copy it
to the
new location, open GnuCash and manually open the new location
(File->Open).
This will probably be the default, but when it opens correctly, I
would
delete the file from the old location just to force it to use the
new
location.
I am not going to recommend backup programs - there are a multitude
for
Windows, and you can do your own Google search.
Once you have the data file backed up securely, the other things are
probably good to have - these include your preference settings and
saved
reports.
The guide
([9]https://gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?rev=5&lang=C&doc=guide)
explains the type of files in section 2.5. Section 2.6.2 talks about
preferences and saved reports, and shows where there are stored in
Windows.
Please let me (us) know if this is confusing, and I can tell you
where mine
are on Windows - I'm writing this on a Mac. The saved reports are in
a
.gnucash folder that is either in Users/<your_user_name> or in "My
Documents".

I have come up with test system to figure out a dependable backup

is a

I have installed GNU on two different computers on/in my land and
have
started entering my accounts and info in my primary computer. I did
not
find a way to install it on a location outside of my primary
computer
into
a local cloud or another computer. (Suggestions ???????) On my
second

into my
GNU folder on my 2nd computer and after 10 or so attempts (after
adding
more data) it seems like both computers are showing the same entries
at
every level. At every attempt I delete all the old files from the
last
attempt, and I open GNU from the short GNU data file which does not
have
that date added to the file name.
If this works I'm planning on doing a video to share so that others

Also, I've been using Quick books for over 10 years and they have
gone up
to over 400% in price and we will start to see others many many many

Well, that's a start... what kind of backup program do you have?
Oh, and please ensure that you do a reply-all so that the

I thought that someone had pointed to a section of the manual or
somewhere
that listed the files that should be backed up.

Subject: Re: [GNC] How do I do a back up of Gnucash?
This is not easy because of the following:
1) There are a multitude of ways to backup data; the "step by step"
way I
set up my backups may not match your backup program. Moreover, Mac
has
different tools that Windows than Linux - on Macs, the "Time
Machine"
comes
with Macs and is pretty common, but Windows and Linux have a wide
variety
of backup programs.
2) The main GnuCash data file name is determined by each user; mine
could
be "MyFinances.gnucash", yours may be "HeidiMoney.gnucash". The name
is
normally "<CustomName>.gnucash"... this is again difficult to put in
a
step-by-step procedure.
3) GnuCash's help files does have a section on which files need to
be
backed up that has been previously referenced. I skip this because
the
other files are kept in a subdirectory of my home directory, and
that
is
backed up on the different computers I have.

My guess is that your basis may be off.? Does your cost basis in
GnuCash
actually match the cost basis your brokerage has?? If not, can you
pinpoint the differences?? I am assuming that you already checked
that
the number of shares matches.
I'm not comparing the numbers against my brokerage statement. I'm
comparing GnuCash with itself. To me this seems like really simple
math.
I've attached a screenshot below.?
All of the buys add up to be $11,793.02
All of the sells add up to be $11,729.04
Doing the simple math this means that I lost $63.98.
Now look at the bottom of the register where GnuCash computed the
Realized Gain/Loss. I put those all against the same account and
that
adds up to a loss of $64.12.
Why the difference? Is this rounding error?
I went back again today and rechecked my math and now everything
lines
up. I must have been missing something in my initial math.
