I have used VeraCrypt and its predecessor TrueCrypt for many years for
this purpose. An encrypted contained holds all my medical and financial
information. When I mount it, it becomes a disk drive for all Windows
knows. The encrypted container is not noticeably slower to read from or
write to than my real disk, as far as I can tell.

VeraCrypt is free and open source, and easy to use. It has Windows, Mac,
and Linux versions.
