Ron,
Renaming accounts is no problem at all. From the Account Tab, select
the Account, Right click and select Edit Account. In the name field of
the dialog just enter the new name you desire. You can rearrange
accounts within a given top level account type by changing the parent
account field. It is also possible to create placeholder accounts which
serve as the parent account for a number of sub-accounts which will
total into the placeholder account but no transactions are allowed with
entries in the placeholder. That is also an option in the edit account
dialogue.
It is a bit more complicated if you need to change the account type as
this may change the meaning of debit and credit entries to the account,
particularly changing between Asset accounts and either Liability or
Equity account or between income and Expense accounts. You may also
need to consider the sense of entries to other accounts affected by the
transaction.
If you delete an account which has transactions affecting the account,
GnuCash will ask you for an account to transfer the transaction entries
to. You can either choose an existing account or create a new account.
