[GNC] upgrading from v 3.8 to v 5.12

Others have given you the correct answer-- i.e. to upgrade to the latest version in each major release. Personally, I'd try a different approach, which is to copy your data file to a remote location, install 5.12, and see whether your file opens in 5.12 directly.
If it opens without trouble, you save yourself the trouble of multiple installations and updates; if it doesn't work, then you haven't really lost much. You just go back to the copy and do the intervening steps all over again...
