Update: I just noticed that my "Pending Interest Payments"account is
actually a sub-account of the "Loan" account and additionally, somehow the
"Include Subaccounts" box got checked in the reconciliation process. Once
I unchecked that box there were no more mysterious cross contaminations
between accounts. It pays to check every possible variable, even the ones
that you think you never changed..

Subject: Strange reconciliation issue
To: gnucash-user at gnucash.org <gnucash-user at gnucash.org>
I have two liability accounts that are interrelated, one I call "Pending
Interest Payments" and the other "Loan". When the lender sends me a bill
for interest I charge the value to the "Pending Interest Payments" account,
then I move the value to the "Loan" account on the due date. I do that to
create balance numbers that match values printed on the bill.
I got behind in reconciling the accounts and as I was catching up I
reconciled the "Pending Interest Payments" account first. Then as I
started on the "Loan" account, the starting balance for February was off by
exactly the amount of the May interest payment which was already reconciled
in the other account. Strangely, I was only able to reset the starting
balance for the January "Loan" account reconciliation by unreconciling the
May reconciliation entry to the "Pending" account. That was in the
transaction initially charging the May interest to "Pending", not the
transaction moving the May interest to the "Loan" account. I believe that
the reconciled split line for May in the "Pending" account was being
counted as a reconciled split line for the January reconciliation in the
"Loan" account.
For other reasons I am running two files concurrently with the same data,
one using GnuCash release 4.8 in Lubuntu Linux, and the other using release
5.11 in Windows 10, and I see the same issue in both files.
Every now and then I see cries for help here from others who are having
issues with the starting balance of a reconciliation. This may be a clue
for some of these mysteries.
