[GNC] Last window opened was report

It sounds like you have the option to open reports in a separate window 
turned on.

If you turn it off, (the default) instead, reports will open in a tab. 
Any tab you leave open when closing, will be there when you re-open GnuCash.

As to how to recover otherwise, use View > New Accounts Page.
