What I usually do is use the "Transaction --> Remove Other Splits" feature
after a transaction autocompletes and carries splits from a previous
transaction. We had a discussion on this list a few weeks ago about adding
the "Remove Other Splits" function to a key binding to make it easier to
invoke.

(My complaint, possibly similar to the concern of the original questioner,
is when I don't NOTICE there are some descriptions / memos carried over
even when there are no monetary split amounts. That has caused me a bit of
consternation sometimes, because those other comments show up in reports
even though you cannot see them in the un-split view on the register.)
