Thanks fly. That's a big help for getting me going (ie, just go to the 
archives, pick a month's threads, and search the thread subjects). Duh!
I had (mistakenly - not having worked with archived mail lists before) 
gone to the archive, opened a month's thread, picked the first one to 
see what it looked liked and was totally confused by the contents. 
Didn't occur to me to just search the thread subjects.
