I've been using QuickBooks Desktop 2016 Nonprofit Industry Edition (which is
simply regular QuickBooks with various accounts renamed). It's got quirks
when using it for nonprofit bookkeeping.
There's a line on the tax return that aggregates donations and another line
in which one must aggregate a subcategory of donations, but no tax line to
report the portion not in the subcategory. If an account and subaccount are
created to be mapped to the tax lines, then there's double counting of the
donations in the subcategory. A contra account is required, not mapped.
That means donations applicable to the subaccount are aggregated in three
diffeent accounts.
Technically, QuickBooks Desktop has no concept of contra accounts, so
negative numbers are entered instead.
You think expensive paid software like QuickBooks gets everything right?
Think again.
