thank you for that.  I will give it a try as soon as I can.  I note the 'double click in the header'.  Maybe that will make all the difference.  I never do any clicking at all,  i just try to grab and pull.  :)
And thanks for the link.  I'll go read it. Things look hopeful.

 Arthur,
Forget about using the right border of the description column - that particular column is special and auto resizes to fill the available screen space.
What I usually do is working from right hand column to left hand column i.e. Balance column to Date column, double click in the headers of each column EXCEPT the Description column - ignore that particular column for the moment.  If this ends up pushing the Balance column too far right, also ignore it for now.
When you have all other columns sized as you'd like them then double click the Description header, if this auto resizes the Description column as you expect all good although I find sometimes this doesn't work.  If the Description column is still to wide then you can move the cursor over the right border of the Description column and drag it left a few centimetres - this usually results in it flicking back and auto sizing correctly.
Wiki/FAQ details are here - https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_resize_my_register_columns.3F_Why_can_I_not_shrink_the_description_column.3F is you want to read more about it.

I just can't get the hang of resizing the ledger columns.  I want the transfer column bigger and i can't do it.   I simply cannot move the  boundary between it and description nor do it any other way.
I tried to follow advice from ai and from the manual.  I'm still not getting it.any help?
