Actually the Gregorian vs Julian debacle wasn’t about the four-year leap year. The Julians knew about that.
It was that 25 leap years a century is too many — the correct number should be 24.25. Thus the Gregorian calendar forgoes one leap year per century for 3 out of every 4 centuries.
