Another alternative I looked into when shopping a Quickbooks Payroll
replacement:
Do the check math and printing from a spreadsheet and/or word processor.
You can set up the tables to do the deduction calculations and either
populate additional sheets per check, formatted to print pretty on your
checks and stubs, or otherwise, export or link that info to a nicely
formatted form in a word processor. (LibreOffice can handle all of that
and I'm sure other office suites can as well)
Export the accounting entries via CSV and import then into GnuCash.
Yes, a short dance, but you only ever enter the data once each cycle.
Everything else is just clicking buttons to copy it around for printing
and then accounting purposes.
I'd bet once you get the hang of it, payroll for 10 employees will take
all of about 15–20 minutes, including generating your liability reports.
(taxes due, unemployment, etc.)
