I bought a used laptop. On the previous laptop, I had separate partitions
for Linux Mint and Windows 11, but this time I've just got one partition
using Windows 11. Unfortunately I use some software for business which does
not have Linux versions and need to use Windows.
With 11 already installed, I went through extensive de-crapification using
Chris Titus's Windows Tool and Revo Uninstaller. Both tools force the
creation of a restore point first in case of disaster. Just using the
built-in Windows application uninstaller, I found more crap to remove.
Then I noticed that the manufacturer was pushing McAfee and uninstalled
that.
I then installed software I use regularly, including GnuCash. By the way, I
had no grief installing LibreOffice or the ancient version of QuickBooks
Desktop I still use for bookkeeping for various nonprofits and the old
credentials were still accepted. I should be allowed to transfer the license
of Microsoft Office from the previous laptop to this one but I keep
encountering problems during the process. I found a cheap license to buy for
an older version of Microsoft Office and may just end up spending the money.
I have to use Microsoft Access and mail merge and LibreOffice isn't a
substitute.
I downloaded GnuCash from Sourceforge since gnucash.org is still
unreachable.
We had several threads a month ago in which McAfee and other anti-virus
software blocked GnuCash installation. I can't say if McAfee would have
given me grief, but I can report that Windows Defender did not. I thought
that some people might have been blocked by Defender.
I suspect that users may not always be aware that their computers had McAfee
pre-installed.
