GnuCash V5.14 improvements include: When Show only subtotals is selected
(which suppresses display of individual transactions) the lowest level of
subtotals is displayed in normal type and with just the category name
instead of in bold type with a "Total of" prefix.

So, account subtotals can be similar to the P&L report, however, it doesn't
allow subtotalling by account type (ie income, expense, etc). It seems
fairly natural to force sorting by account type if accounts are selected
(or at least provide the option).
