That is what happens with Nextcloud, and then Nextcloud syncs your
changes in the background.
Before and after changing Gnucash just check that you are synced and
online and it will happen seamlessly.

The icon in the attached screenshot is blue if all is OK, and grey if
it is not.

If you have not had a computer online for a while, you need to check it
has the latest Gnucash files from your server. This may mean waiting
for the sync to happen or directing it to happen if needed.

I have the same Nextcloud and Debian setup as you mention and am
happily using it away from home right now!
