[GNC] Logs and Backups

Thank Tom.  Appreciate the information.  I do realize that the backups are small.  I am more about efficiency.  90 backups, for me, is, way too excessive.  Think about it — if you restored from backup number 45 - what good would it be?  My guess is you would probably never restore from anything more than 3 backups - so that is 87 (x2 log plus backup) files sitting on your storage space just doing nothing.  But that's my thought process.

Anyway, I think this is an issue only because, IMO, there is no good default.  While the 30-day default might be fine for most people, I have heard several people say they do not go into the system every day.  If they only go in once a month or once every two months - the risk exists that they may not have a backup file.  By the same token, if someone goes in every day or multiple times a day and does not realize the default is 30 days - then they could have 30, 60, 90 backups (or more) which to me is very inefficient.

So, I think this is more about letting others know so that they can change the setting to fit their need.  I have been using the system for many years and never realized this fact.  I just wanted to verify that my understanding was correct so that I can adjust accordingly.

Hi Ken,

The number of backups you have is dependent on your Auto-Save Time Interval and how long GnuCash is open (and also depends on if you're manually doing saves).  If you set the Auto-Save Interval to zero, then you've disabled Auto-Save, and the number of backups will be totally determined by you -- whenever you decide to do a save.

BTW, I'm not sure that you need to be concerned about limiting backups.  I have over 30 years worth of data in my GnuCash data file; and it's only 11 MB in size.  So disk space isn't really an issue.  I have my backup retention time set to 21 days; and currently I have about 90 backups.  For me, having multiple backups is more reassuring than a bother.  Just my opinion.

Is this behavior correct?  If yes, would changing it to be a definitive number be difficult?  I assuming it is, otherwise I would have thought it would have been changed by now.

This may have been mentioned in the past - and if so - sorry for the repeat.  However, I noticed today 10 ".log" and 10 ".<<date>>.gnucash" files.  So, I am assuming that gnucash is keeping 10 transaction and log file backups.  Is this correct?  If so, is this the default and if it is the default, can this be changed to only 2 or 3?
