I really wish everyone were familiar with the FAQ, because consulting it
before posting yet another iteration of a common query would reduce much
of the repetitive traffic on this mailing list -- and the person with
the question would not have to untangle and interpret a bunch of varying
answers.

I agree with your reasoning about not spending developer resources on
changing how column widths work.
