were exposed longer to attacks AND as the number of remaining users 
becomes smaller over time the likelihood of an attacker spending time to 
try to discover a new exploit goes down.

The real problem with an old, no longer supported OS is that it will not 
receive updates of drivers, etc. and so new hardware not going to be 
supported. But are you really likely to be adding new hardware to an old 
machine running under an old OS.
