And if your mail client supports threading messages, you can trash an 
entire conversation at once for topics of no interest. (though I'd 
caution to not be trigger happy too often, as new messages will just 
come in anyway on the same topic. I usually wait a few weeks to trash 
them, marking them 'as read' in the interim)

Another route is to set up Gmane access and use a news/mail client that 
supports Newsgroups. Then once you are comfortable with it, turn off 
e-mail receipt entirely. (but stay subscribed, so your replies don't get 
queued for moderation) See the Wiki for instructions. (yes, I know they 
need to be updated, but I figured it out with what is documented now, so 
it shouldn't be too hard.)
