Installing 11 while keeping 9

I'm using GnuCash 1.8.9 with Xandros 3.0 and would like to hang onto it
while trying 1.8.11. (1.8.9 was installed automatically through Xandros
Networks.) I put 1.8.11 in usr/local, as the console output below shows:

AMD2400:/usr/local/gnucash1_8_11/gnucash-1.8.11# ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking for non-GNU ld... /usr/bin/ld
checking if the linker (/usr/bin/ld) is GNU ld... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
AMD2400:/usr/local/gnucash1_8_11/gnucash-1.8.11#

...and...

 From /etc/profile:
PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games"

Is there a simple fix, like editing the PATH statement?
