Actually my Windows user name is "Mark" so it's not likely that's the 
problem. I do have a problem in that when I renamed the ".gconf" folder  
to "_.gconf" while I was testing now I cannot rename it back because 
Windows does not allow users to name folders beginning with a "." but 
that's a separate issue really.

(BTW, Does the list software automatically CC replies to the sender or 
is that a protocol I should be following when posting to the list?)
