I have seen something like this as well, although it was within the same
checking account. I had some check numbers missing from the sequence
(because my wife has that check book and hadn't used them yet). So if the
sequence went 534, 535, skip a whole bunch, 700, 701, ..., then when I would
try to enter a new check 702, the number would be filled in as 536. This would
happen whenever I restarted Gnucash, although once I corrected 536->702 in
one session the problem was gone for the remainder of that gnucash session.
I looked into it a little bit and it had to do with the next value of the
number cell which holds the check number. Somehow as my records were loaded,
check 535 would be the last one loaded (even after 701), so that the blank
transaction at the bottom of the register would have it's next value
initialized to 536 rather than to 701. I haven't had much luck investigating
further, though.
