Quicken has this same behavior - Quicken 98 on the Mac, at least, will use (usually)
the value of the last check entered, even if it's out of sequence. This is probably
the correct behavior, actually - what if you accidentally use a set of checks out of
sequence, then go back and continue? If it automatically used the highest number
used, you'd have to correct each check as you enter it. However, I think Quicken
does remember across sessions so when you restart Quicken it does remember the last
one used.
However, the original problem cited was picking up the check number from a transfer
- this is clearly not correct.
