split transactions

Did you try the "multi-line view" in the register, i.e. account view? 
That's the necessary viewing mode to enter a split transaction. (At least 
that's how I didn't find split transaction stuff as I started with 
gnucash.) Once you get to this view mode, split transaction are fully 
supported...
