Sorry if I came across a bit snappy, but it's just that if I can't read
a conversation on a list I might miss something that I can contribute

WRT translating the user manual, it's not only huge, it's somewhat of a
moving
target at the moment.  If you see a part of the manual that contains a 
FIXME or a comment along the lines of "this section is not fully documented
yet", just put in a placeholder for that section, or, if you feel really
inspired, write documentation in English for that section :)
