This is probably your problem.  Downgrade to gcc 2.96 and try again.

Eh...  Not an unreasonable change, but not necessarily a reasonable
one, either.  -Werror means treat all compiler warnings as errors.

How did you ./configure gnucash?  I presume you ran "make install" to
install it?
