HBCI card corrupt?

Hello Everyone,
I have just upgraded to 1.8.5 and wanted to have a look at the new HBCI 
features. Unfortunately, I am not getting anywhere (which may and probably is 
totally unrelated to the upgrade).

My HBCI Card is apparently not recognized. When running hbcidump I get:
root(eno,archives)# hbcicard dump
Kontaktiere Karte.
Bitten legen Sie Ihre Karte in einen Leser ein
Karte ist eingelegt.
Dies ist leider weder eine RSA- noch eine DDV-Karte.
root(eno,archives)#

Who has an idea what may be wrong. I had contacted the bank but they were not 
able to "test" the card. Could the card reader be broken? Or perhaps the card 
itself?

ps. I went back to gnucash-hbci 1.8.4. but the problem persists.
