use the gnucash register for other apps

Hi,

reading a bit through the gnucash source, i found a passage on the
register where it says that it should be possible to use it for other
applications to. I'm planning a database frontend for which the register
shoul be usefull. My problem is that I'm not very familiar with gui
programming. Can anybody point me out on what I would need to start with
some tests?
