I am not aware of any changes to gnc-trace that would cause the symptoms
that you are reporting.  The code that writes to /tmp/gnucash.trace
has been in there since roughly forever; the error messages have *always* 
been hidden.  

I'm truly sorry you lost a lot of time on this, but I have no idea
quite what the problem was, or how you fixed it.
