After using --disable-ofx with autogen.sh and rebuilding, it built OK.

gnucash --nofile
File -> Add New Hierarchy
merge druid starts, Next.
hierarchy druid starts, Next.
Currency selector appears with the full list, I select GBP, Next.
Select the account tree etc. Works fine, up to the known problem with 
AccountGroup that I'll work on next.

?? Still can't reproduce the currency selector error at this end.

(I'll investigate libofx another time.)

checkout -r gnucash-gnome2-dev gnucash 
./autogen.sh --disable-ofx --enable-opt-style-install --enable-doxygen 
--disable-nls --prefix=/opt/gnome2               

(this is just the tail of a VERY long list of similar reports from all over
