1.8 -> G2 Localization related troubles

Have you tried to add (manually) the encoding of your files in the 
header of the XML gnucash 1.8 files ?
Instead of starting the file with

<?xml version="1.0"?>

start with

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="(your codeset)"?>
