Its whatever interval the last reconciliation period covered.
The first time you finish reconciling an account, GnuCash will remember
the reconciliation date that you used.
The second time you finish reconciling, GnuCash figures out the time
interval between the first and second reconciliations. It records both
the reconciliation date and the reconciliation interval.
The third time (and subsequent times) you start a reconciliation,
GnuCash will compute the proposed ending date based upon the previous
reconciliation date and the reconciliation interval. When you finish
reconciling, gnucash will update the reconciliation date and interval
based on the current inputs.
Given this algorithm, if you reconcile on a monthly (or any other
regular) basis GnuCash should learn that by the third reconciliation and
should start presenting you with the correct dates in the initial
reconciliation dialog. If you switch reconciliation intervals at any
point after the third time, gnucash should learn that new interval and
present you with the correct date the next time you reconcile.
