Those XML files are not the place where translations are created or edited, 
they are rather generated from the single po file which --

The po files are the one and only method that is used in GnuCash to handle 
translations, as all translations are managed by gettext. You should read the 
gettext documentation - it is installed on any Linux/Unix system. Also, I'd 
recommend http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Translation .
