compiling on opensuse 10.3 fails

No, you do not, but you will need swig to build from SVN.
Please check whether aclocal added GUILE_MODULE_AVAILABLE to aclocal.m4
by including the contents of /usr/share/aclocal/guile.m4.  According to
http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/opensuse/guile-devel.html
guile-devel should ship that file.
