For the readme have you tried seeing what happens if you have the link open in a new window?

It will probably be to no effect but that's the only other thing I can think of right now

Tim,

Personally I don't have a strong opinion about this.

This whole thread started because the download screen is shown for the Readme 
file, which John asked if it could be avoided.

It seems it can't when the file is hosted on SF. It could be avoided if it's 
hosted on the www.gnucash.org.

For the binaries, I think it's indeed ok if the SF download page shows up 
first.
