For SQL backends, dates are stored using mysql and postgresql TIMESTAMP columns, and I don't know if they support alternate calendars.  If they don't, we could use generic strings instead so that "20100230" (30th day of Gullan) has meaning whereas February 30th doesn't.

Would it not be better to keep the format in the database/file as it
is and change the UI date representation as appropriate?  If you
change the format of the stored data then an accounts file would not
be portable across languages.  Or perhaps I misunderstand your
meaning.
