I came to the same conclusion yesterday. I had already selected another theme, 
and when I started my most recent GnuCash build, there were no black tabs.

Strangely enough, I can't even reproduce this anymore with the MS-Windows 
theme. If I switch to this theme again, I get nice and clean tabs in some 
beige color.

Perhaps just switching themes resets something properly ?
