As a user who regularly has many more future transactions in the
register than will fit in one screen, I ask what other visual gimmick
could be used instead of the vertical line?

The horizontal line is usually off the screen in my file. Further, if
the register is not sorted by date, there could be a seemingly random
mix of future and past transactions visible. Old fogeys like me need
bifocals to see those little 'c' or 'n' letters on the screen. I
believe the vertical line was probably easy to implement and this old
dog did learn that trick, to continue mixing metaphors. The pink
background color that Robert used when there is an imbalance in a
transaction is another visual gimmick that I strongly support as a user.

If you believe that there are better visual gimmicks to indicate these
conditions, please present them now, but there should be some visual
evidence for these conditions.
