Branching unstable

I don't have anything critical to merge still. I plan to do some more 
bugfixing, but that shouldn't block creating the unstable branch. In 
particular the python bindings are acting up.

Perhaps Christopher Lam's report work can still be merged before the unstable 
branch is created.
