You set the "Currency" field to something different than the default. Did you 
also make sure that the accounts under *both* the "Accounts" and "Categories" 
tabs are in that currency that you chose? 

I experienced the same problem you described and the reason was that the 
account under "Accounts" and under "Categories" had no common currency.
