Does their version use guile-1.3.4 or guile-1.3? If it uses guile-1.3
then you should use that and gnucash should install just fine. But if
it uses guile-1.3.4 then things aren't as simple.

Some people have reported that creating the '.so' link you mentioned
does actually work, but it is not guaranteed.

You could also compile gnucash from source.
