scheme and/or slib?

I would really like to try out gnucash, but I am really confused about
something.  Do I need to install scheme AND slib?  Or is scheme only
required if I want to write scripts?

Also, I know this may not be the correct forum for this, but I'm hoping
someone can help me...  I downloaded slib, but I am at a loss as far as
installing it.  There are instructions for different systems, but I'm not
sure which ones to do.  Can anyone give me some simple instructions for how
to install slib on Linux?  I'm using Slackware 7.1 on a 486 with Linux
kernel version 2.2.16.
