Stocks/Mutuals: my statements don't have +/- shares; how to enter?

I tried that on a whim, no joy. Maybe I did it wrong, or perhaps my
version of gnucash is not bleeding-edge enough -- version 1.4.10.
I'll try again when 1.6.0 comes out.
