OK, I'm grasping at straws here ... libxpm, the X11 pixmap library?
Try downloading/enabling a different GTK theme, does the checkmark
appear then? (make sure you pick a theme with a custom checkmark in it ...)
I really doubt it, but maybe an old/broken X Server ??? or Xlibs ???
